Tonight’s orange & yellow lights celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the James Beard Foundation and the 22nd Annual James Beard Awards, which honor the finest chefs, restaurants and food professionals in the U.S. Both colors have special meaning for JBF: orange, as a nod to the tomato-soup color of the Beard House walls when James Beard lived there; and yellow, which represents the pineapple, a symbol of hospitality that’s also present in the Beard House. more

If you visit the building, don’t miss the beautiful Art Deco ceiling mural of a celestial, Machine-Age sky, in ESB’S main lobby, restored in 2009 by a team of artists and historians. In fact, it took nearly twice the time to restore the mural as it took to construct the actual Empire State Building itself—a total of one year and 45 days.
