Trinidad is a Caribbean paradise that marches to its own beat! It’s the home of carnival, a variety of musical styles such as calypso, soca and parang, and is the birthplace of the steelpan musical instrument.
The fun loving people of the twin island republic are a melting pot of many different races with ancestors from Africa, India, China and several European countries. This unique cultural mix is evident by the numerous places of worship found on the island and the variety of languages you can hear including English, Hindi, French and Spanish. The diverse ancestry and religious backgrounds contribute to the many festivals and culinary delights that are enjoyed on the island
Located just 32 km from her sister isle Tobago, Trinidad is the southernmost island in the Caribbean and lies just 7 miles off the northeastern coast of Venezuela. Its area is almost 2000 square miles with a population of 1.3 million people. The climate is beautiful, with temperatures 79-85 degrees year-round with constant breezes. The local currency is Trinidad & Tobago Dollar, but the U.S. Dollar is also widely accepted.
Carnival
Considered one of the greatest shows on earth, Trinidad Carnival is an explosion of color, music and revelry. The two-day parade begins pre-dawn on Carnival Monday, or ´J’ouvert’. Scores of revelers dress in old clothes and are covered in oil, grease, paint, chocolate or warm mud moving to the beat of the music from the large music trucks. The vibrant colors and splendor of this festival are highlighted on Carnival Tuesday when masqueraders take to the streets in their full, intricate costumes, dancing to the pulsating rhythms of steelpan and calypso that can be heard throughout the streets of Port of Spain.
Bird Watching
At the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, nature lovers can visit the protected roosting site of the National bird of Trinidad, the Scarlet Ibis. Returning flocks of these magnificent birds can best be seen at sunset as their spectacular red plumage envelops the skies.
Turtle Watching
During the months of March to August, the endangered leatherback turtle, the largest of all surviving turtle species make their way on the beaches of Trinidad to lay their eggs. The females come ashore and laboriously dig nests in the sand to lay. Two months later, the baby turtles hatch and make their way out to sea. This wonderful marvel can be experienced on the beaches along the north coast of the island. -
