Great deals for Spring & Summer 2011 if you book before 31st March!!Things to See and Do
Those in the know head for Le Marche, which along with Umbria and Tuscany, constitutes the central region of Italy. Le Marche is situated in the east of the peninsula, and sits between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains. While the Adriatic coast is well known for its many excellent beaches, the interior remains unspoiled by tourism, and you will find towns and villages where the pressures of modern life seem worlds away.
Le Marche is a virtual treasure chest, rich in history, bursting with nature, art, folklore, and culinary traditions. Here you will find incredibly picturesque hilltop towns and villages enjoying panoramic views of lush, verdant valleys.
Renaissance palazzos and beautiful churches with fine works of art appear around every corner, and watching the impact of the changes in seasons on the mountainous countryside is a phenomenal experience and a privilege. Italy of course is well known for its wide and deep sense of culture and history. Le Marche is a major contributor to that, and within the region there are several prehistoric settlements, roman ruins and so forth. There are some 3000+ years of history and various sites provide evidence of prehistoric human Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlements. There are settlements of the Picena, Roman and Barbaric civilisations, fifty-seven historical town centres (Centri Storici), with countless abbeys, castles and fortresses, patrician villas, some seventy plus art galleries and both archaeological and ‘theme’ museums, all of which play their part in preserving the rich history.
The Best Of Nature.........
Food and Wine.
For a true taste of history, you will discover that the cucina povera (peasant food) is simply outstanding. Le Marche is well known for the quality of it’s local produce, and many restaurants do not have menu’s but prepare whatever is best on the day. Lunch is the main meal for most and typically includes an anti-pasti dish (starter), a prima (first) course of pasta and a seconda course of meat. Dolci, or dessert, is of course available for those feeling brave enough. Do not be intimidated though by the menu, and ordering only one or two courses is more than acceptable.
Depending where you find yourself at lunchtime will influence the choices available. If you have driven down to the coast you will find fresh seafood specialities such as fish soup (brodetto) together with a wide selection of caught that morning fish dishes. If you find yourself further inland, meat is the mainstay of the menu with poultry, beef, lamb, goat, rabbit, pork, and wild boar widely featured. For those of you who normally shop in supermarkets, you will find the range of fresh, seasonal ingredients, homemade pastas, local cheeses, truffles and bread extraordinary. Most villages and towns host weekly markets that provide an invaluable source for buying fresh food at more competitive prices. The Le Marche region also produces an extraordinary range of wines, including 13 varieties of DOC designated wines. -
