It’s Albrecht Dürer birthday today. This famous woodcut records the arrival of an Indian rhinoceros in Lisbon in 1515. Rhinoceros had not been seen in Europe for over 1,000 years, so Dürer worked solely from sketches and reports that had reached Nuremberg of the event. Here’s a peek behind the scenes of the free exhibition on the horse, opening next Thursday. Curator Nigel puts the finishing touches to a reconstruction of an Assyrian chariot horse’s harness. The original is around 3,000 years old and includes cheekpieces and blinkers which helped horses to keep calm in the noise and confusion of battle. more

This Chinese porcelain Zamzam water flask is one of the objects on display in the Hajj exhibition.
‘Zamzamiyas’ are bottles containing water from the sacred well of Zamzam, in Mecca. Pilgrims would often bring their own flasks to Mecca and fill them with Zamzam water which they would use to drink from during their Hajj. Flasks containing Zamzam would also be bought back home to give as gifts. Find out more about Hajj, the sacred Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, in the exhibition. More info: http more
